Emily

Emily helped Rome to bed. They walked upstairs together and she followed him to his bedroom. He pulled his shirt off over his head, dropped his jeans, barely aware that Emily was there as he climbed into bed.

“Do you need anything?” she asked him. He shook his head. “Well, you know where I am.”

She turned to leave.

“Actually, Emily.” He paused for a second. “No, forget it.”

“Go on,” she said.

“You don’t have to. But I was wondering if you’d lie here with me for a bit. Just talk to me so I stop thinking about it.”

“Of course I will.” She walked over to lie on top of the duvet but Rome had already lifted it for her to get under. She couldn’t help but think of Georgina as she slid in next to Rome. They lay there facing the ceiling in the dark and they chatted about sheep and cows. They talked about everything they’d done on the farm the last few weeks and Emily talked about the first time she’d lambed a ewe with Seth. Rome talked for a while but then he was quiet and just listened to Emily as she talked about her old life and Mark and her parents. Soon she was feeling tired and they just lay there in silence.
